Create a World of Support: See a New Way to Inspire Each Other
Wouldn’t it be great if we could authentically share vulnerabilities and support each other rather than feel intimidated by other people’s success? There is power in a supportive perspective. I have found this to be especially true as a female leader in a world that tends to undermine the intelligence, strength, and capabilities of women. I wrote the following poem when social events around the world revealed a greater need to support and encourage women as leaders. Let’s name the challenges, support each other, and create a healthier world that appreciates the talents and gifts of all.
I will lend you courage.
I too have stood before the abyss
And experienced the dilemma -
Turn back
Or jump to a new way.
I will lend you courage.
I also was shaken by grabbing hands
And struggled to respond -
Give in
Or say “No. Not today.”
I will lend you courage.
I have seen scowls shouting judgment
And faltered on my path to question -
Stop moving
Or believe I’m going the right way.
I will lend you courage.
I have heard people’s disparaging views
And stopped seeing true while asking -
Accept their cynicism
Or create a better day.
I will lend you courage.
To leap the abyss
Shake off grabbing hands
Ignore destructive sneers and shouts
To see your truth
And follow your own lovely way.
I will lend you courage
With kind, affirming words
And a vision of hope
For going beyond imposed limitations
To embrace possibilities of today.
Will you lend me courage?
When I again stand at the abyss
Try to escape grabbing hands
Face distracting scowls
Or hear shouts diminishing hope.
I will lend you courage.
Will you offer me the same?
